APA 7th Edition

APA is a state of mind…

Getting out of the MLA Mindset

Whether its writing your top left centered header rather than a cover page or writing “work cited” for MLA instead of references… The first year transition from MLA formatting to APA is the hardest! This area is a an amalgamation of both getting out of the MLA mindset and the new changes going forward with APA 7th edition!

6th edition APA – Closing a chapter (RIP 2009-2019) 7th edition (2019-Present)

Another transition in paper formatting is the 6th edition online mindset. While moving from MLA to APA, many first year students are still finding a lot of material on 6th edition still out there where many websites have not made the update to 7th edition APA. This causes confusion for new undergraduate students since they are unsure which elements to include in there papers! Running Head on cover pages and Retrieved from being the old remnants of 6th edition no longer used in 7th edition. Another element is using all authors in their intext citations rather than putting et al. on their first citation without needing a signal phrase. In this webpage I will go over some of the MLA no no’s and elements needed for a complete APA paper.

In Fall 1, Brandman University made the transition from 6th edition APA to 7th edition APA.
6th edition APA was used for many Universities for 10 years from 2009 to 2019. The 7th edition was released in October 2019 and is the new standard for APA. 7th edition is the format you will use throughout your academic career with Brandman University. Thankfully, 7th edition APA is also in many respects easier than the 6th edition.
No more Running Head!

Google Scholar

Using the cite tool for APA citations

While I do prefer students start with the library databases to find academic articles there is still some confusion about the steps on how to find these materials. Most students who have been in the Google mindset might first start with Google or Google Scholar to find these materials. While Google Scholar is not a bad place to start, this resource should be used in conjunction with library databases. Most Google Scholar links will lead to actual academic journal websites online that charge to access their articles rather than online EBSCO links. Something I do like about Google Scholar is the popularity mark showing how many times an individual scholarly article has been cited and by whom.

Don’t purchase article content when you have a university library for FREE!

Finding an academic article on Google Scholar especially if you are actually able to access the article without paying may be a nice place to start, but your research should not stop there. Google Scholar should be a possible starting place. If you did hit a paywall, you can find these same titles in the library databases using possible article keywords rather than full sentences.

Citing your found article for APA end references

Make sure to confirm an APA citation. “What’s missing from this citation?”

While this APA citation looks right, a google scholar citation is not always perfect either. In this case the academic journal name should be in uppercase for each first word. ๐Ÿ™‚

Research on Social Work Practice

Flexner, A. (2001). Is social work a profession? Research on Social Work Practice, 11(2), 152-165.

As we can see here an academic journal citation end reference is always last name, first initial. (the publication year). This is the article title in lowercase. The Academic journal Name is in Italics, volume 11 is in italics (The 2 is the issue), and the pages the article is on are 152-165.
Here is another academic journal article end reference citation…

So an in-text citation would be (Ruxton, 2016).

APA Hotkey for Microsoft Word: When you start a paragraph in the body of your paper you can press the TAB key to indent the required 1/2 inch! ๐Ÿ™‚

Be careful with your rulers! Always indent a 1/2 inch for the start of each paragraph and a 1/2 inch for the 2nd & 3rd lines of your end references…

Need to indent the 2nd line and 3rd lines for your end reference citation? Click Ctrl+T.
This will automatically indent the 2nd and 3rd lines for your APA end reference citation.

This section is a group of links I have found useful in the last seven years of teaching for Brandman University and also my own continued journey through my own Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management, for which I am in the end dissertation phase.

Use of โ€œ&โ€ and โ€œandโ€
Use โ€œandโ€ at all times outside the parentheses for intext citations and ampersand โ€œ&โ€ inside the citation.

Don’t write Work Cited for your citations which is in MLA format! Write References for your References!

Don’t use the Citation machine and forget to put the publication date I supplied you with from your readings!
The Citation Machine website is not a quick fix for APA and will automatically put (n.d.) for no date if you do not supply the publication date.

Don’t put (n.d.) for no date if there is a date given on a citation! An academic journal article for instance will always have a publication date! So will a video online!

UMass Global LIBRARY
Don’t include the link to your UMass Library Links!

This is your APA citation from UMass Global library

that link is the DOI, Digital Object Identifier. That is OK to use where present.

By far my favorite and the most complete guide is found at Mount Royal University in Canada. Please refer to this guide for your in-text citations and APA reference citations! Here is the new 7th edition APA guide!

Owl Purdue APA Sample Paper – 7th edition STUDENT PAPER
Since the papers you write in this course are short, you will not need either the author’s note or the abstract! found on this sample paper. Please get comfortable writing your cover page, and 1/2-inch indentations using the TAB key at the start of each paragraph. You should also put the body of your paper in double space. With the 7th edition, you no longer need a Running Head on your paper…

But Mr. Mac what about Google Scholar?
Well, Google Scholar is a great source for academic scholarly articles but unfortunately, you will find many of these resources are blocked and are mainly PPV (Pay Per View). Since you have free access to academic articles through Leatherby Libraries you do not need to do this! You can however search for materials if you wish first through Google Scholar and then search again through UMass Global Library

DOI: What is the Digital Object Identifier?

The DOI or Digital Object Identifier is called a permalink or permanent link to an academic article. These are established so authors and academics could find an exact link to an academic article that does not break. These digital object identifiers are permanent links to the material that do not break over time. Meaning the link will never stop working.

The short DOI Service creates shortened DOIยฎ names, of the form 10/abcde, as aliases for existing DOI names, which are often very long strings.

How to use et al. in APA 7th edition…
What the #$%#%$ is et al. ???

The abbreviation “et al.” is short for the Latin phrase “et alia,” meaning “and others” (LatinBlock, 2022).
